Federal officials have leveled accusations against the Preferred RV Resort in Pahrump, Nevada, alleging discrimination against a family with young children in violation of the Fair Housing Act. The family’s complaints revolve around age restrictions placed on amenities at the resort, including the pool, spa, wood shop, stained glass shop, and billiards room. The family stopped letting their children use these facilities due to concerns about verbal attacks and feeling unwelcome, ultimately leading them to leave the resort.

HUD’s general counsel, Damon Smith, emphasized the importance of equal access to recreational amenities for families with children. The case will proceed to an administrative law judge, with the possibility of damages for the affected family if discrimination is proven. This case underscores the need to uphold fair housing practices and nondiscrimination policies in recreational facilities and accommodations.
